County updates tattoo ordinance

Tattoo shops in the county will not be allowed to split tongues, to remove tattoos, or to offer to customers any procedure that requires anesthesia.
Those restrictions are now included in the updated Tattoo and Body Piercing Ordinance recently signed by the Washington County Board of Commissioners.
The ordinance also prohibits procedures involving industrial piercing bars and raises the age of the business operator applying for a permit with the county from 18 to 21.
Prior to the request to the county commissioners to update the ordinance, the changes were already approved by the Washington County Health Department Board.
When the request was made to commissioners, Health Department representative Maggie Borden cited high infection rates, blood loss, and nerve damage as reasons for the restriction on procedures such as tongue splitting.
Operators of tattoo/body piercing shops will be required to have written policies that reflect the new restrictions. That policy must also include the requirements in the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Blood Borne Pathogens Standard. The policy must also detail the disciplinary action, including possible dismissal, employees could be subject to for failing to meet the requirements.
