Committee forming for planning holiday decorating, festivities

Those who have been residents of Salem for several decades may well remember a time when colorful lights were strung from light pole to light pole all the way from the North Main stoplight to the railroad on South Main.

The animated Santa in the Bennett’s Clothing Store was always a hit with kids as he waved to passersby and every store made an effort to make their store windows a source of holiday wonder as shoppers passed by.

The Washington County Tourism Commission in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce plans to make this holiday season a very special one creating new memories with expanded decorations and holiday events for the entire community and visitors alike.

In order to make this a truly memorable and successful event, the Tourism and Chamber will hold a meeting for those who would be interested working on the holiday project on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. in the second floor conference room of the courthouse. At that time, ideas will be shared concerning some of the projects being considered for decorating  as well as holiday events and ways both the business and residential community can get involved.

It will take a great deal of time and effort to transform the downtown into a holiday wonderland and preparations prior to the actual installation of decorations and the events will entail a great deal of planning. Anyone interested in joining in the fun is encouraged to attend the meeting.
