Addiction awareness event June 1

This past Saturday's March Against Addiction gets underway.

Community involvement concerning the addiction crisis is growing.

This past Saturday, the second annual March Against Addiction took place. Organizer Steve Crane said this year's event was bigger and he was happy to have both the Washington County Family YMCA and the Salem National Guard Unit partner with him. (Coverage of the event will be in next Tuesday's Leader.)

Another awareness event is set to take place next Saturday, June 1, at CenterPeace in Salem.

This event is organized by Dana Brewer, who struggled with substance abuse herself. She knows what it's like and wants to raise awareness of the problem as well as highlight local community resources.

"Your Story, Our Mission" will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature speakers, live music, booths, food, face painting for children and a raffle. Brewer's long-term goal is to establish a recovery home in Washington County.
