A race has already shaped up for one of the open seats in the May 8, 2018, primary election. Filing for this election year officially began Jan. 10 and will end Feb. 9 at noon.
Two republican candidates are vying for the commissioner district 2 seat: current commissioner Preston Shell and current county councilman Todd Ewen.
Another race to watch is that of the sheriff’s seat. There is already one name for both the republicans and the democrats. Republican Roy Overshiner and democrat Brent Miller both filed last Wednesday.
Also filing for open seats were: Randall “Randy” Bills, auditor; Tim Rodman, recorder; John Revels, county council district 2 and Jason Nelson, county council district 4.
Republican township trustee candidates who have filed are: David Brown, Brown Township; Steven Anderson, Franklin Township; Matthew Incantalupo, Jackson Township; Angela “Angie” Wilson, Monroe Township and Dennis Fleming Sr., Pierce Township.
Marsha Guthrie, who filed for Vernon Township, is the only democratic trustee candidate to file so far.
Offices up for election this year are: prosecuting attorney, auditor, recorder, sheriff, assessor, county commissioner district 2, county council districts 1, 2, 3 and 4, all township trustees, all township advisory boards, Town of Campbellsburg clerk/treasurer and town council district 1 and Town of New Peking clerk/treasurer and town council district 1.
School board offices open are as follows:
East Washington School Corporation (three seats): Franklin Township, Jackson Township and Pierce Township.
Salem Community Schools: Three at-large seats.
West Washington School Corporation (four seats): at large, Brown Township, Howard Township and Town of Campbellsburg.
Candidates are also being sought for 10 at large seats for the State Republican Convention and seven at large seats for the State Democratic Convention.
At the state level, the state senate and state representative seats are also both up for election.
Anyone interested in filing for an open seat may do so at the Washington County Clerk's Office, located at the new government center on Jackson Street.
