Make Thanksgiving every day

Some moments just stop you in your tracks. No rhyme or reason, you just feel a sense of clarity. For me, one of those moments recently came in the Chick-Fil-A drive-thru.

As many people know, my husband Alan and I went from fixing a house up in town to moving to a finished home on over three acres shortly after the birth of our son, Maverick. It’s been a long road, but in time and with a lot of luck, we are able to rent out the house we were working on and move to the quiet country.

Back to the drive-thru...

My son and I were in line waiting after I placed our order. Amid Maverick’s cries of “num num, nummy!” (his way of saying he’s hungry) and my thought of why Chick-Fil-A’s chicken, albeit delicious chicken, was so expensive, my moment came. What was first an inward complaint of the price turned into “Hey, I’m so happy I can afford to take my son here.”

After that initial thought, I looked back on our day. Before lunch, we went to a store where I bought quite a few items of fall clothing for Maverick. My child will be warm once the autumn chill finally gets here. Earlier that morning, we went on a playdate to Bouncetime at the sportsplex in New Albany. Maverick got to experience something new and exciting. I got to see him go from running around timidly at first to growing bolder as he climbed a bouncehouse and jumped around on the trampoline floor.

Because the temperature was in the 90s (with an even higher heat index) and Mav’s full day was wearing him down, I got in the backseat and we enjoyed the air conditioning along with our meal. We took our time and I relished in a parent’s simple joy of seeing their child happy.

Gratefulness begets gratefulness. If you can see a blessing in one small moment or action, you can see it in another more easily. I know people say to write down three things you are thankful for each day, but sometimes it’s even better to just feel it.
