In a rematch of last year's title bout, the West Washington girls' basketball team squared off with Trinity Lutheran in the championship game of the sectional 61 tournament, hosted at Orleans High School Saturday night. WW lost an absolute stunner, 58-55, after the Lady Cougars drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Lady Senators home distraught, heartbroken and without the championship trophy for the second straight season.

The Borden Braves wore down host Salem en route to a 59-38 win in the championship game of the First Harrison Holiday Tournament to take home their third consecutive title Saturday night.

The Lions hung tough for most of the first half, going into the locker room down only five but Borden extended its lead to 10 in the opening seconds of the third quarter and the Lions couldn't regroup.

Senators bedevil Saints
It was the beginning of a new season around the state this past Friday night as tournament play got underway. And for the Senators, it was another stellar performance that propelled them into this week's Sectional 39 semi-finals.

Soccer Lions repeat as sectional champs
The SHS boys' soccer team held off Trinity Lutheran 1-0 in the sectional 59 championship game hosted at Charlestown High School Thursday evening. Dustin Day scored the lone goal of the contest off an assist by Dakota Thompson, giving the Lions their second sectional title in as many years.

Golf scramble to benefit Johnson scholarship fund
A golf scramble to benefit the Randy Johnson Memorial Scholarship fund will be hosted at Western Hills Gold Course on Saturday, July 14.

Registration begins at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m.

Cost is $200 for a four-person team, which includes green fees and cart rental. Lunch, consisting of sandwiches, chips and a drink, will be provided. Participants will compete for prizes in various related contest throughout the day, and will have two chances at winning a new car.

Checks should be made payable to Salem High School, and mailed to Chuck Walter, 305 Wendy Lane, Salem.

Team captain contact information, including name, address, phone and email, should be included with payment. Deadline for entry is Wednesday, July 1.

Softball comes full circle for Ragains family
When Mallory Ragains was diagnosed with malignant melanoma 10 years ago, it wasn't her health she was concerned about. At such a young age, she was more worried about when would be able to return to playing softball, the game she and her family shared a tremendous love for, said the recent West Washington High School graduate, reflecting on that time.

Salem held off Brownstown Central 5-4 Wednesday evening in the semi-final round of the sectional 30 tournament to advance to the championship game, set for 6 p.m. Thursday at North Harrison.

West Washington came away with a 3-2 win over host Springs Valley Tuesday night to earn a trip to the sectional 61 title game. The Lady Senators will face Orleans in the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m.
