Speedway GM is speaker at WCEGP meeting

High energy and enthusiastic. Those are the adjectives used by Richard Deaton, general manager of Salem Speedway to describe Bo LeMastus, new track owner.

LeMastus, Crosley Brands CEO and part-time racer, is co-owner of the DGR-Crosley NASCAR racing team.

Deaton was guest speaker at the Washington County Economic Growth Partnership quarterly membership meeting held July 19. In the interview style presentation, Deaton answered questions from WCEGP President Justin Green about the future of Salem Speedway.

Deaton gave a brief history of the track, built in 1947, and expressed admiration and appreciation for the improvements made by the most recent owners, Owen and Beverly Thompson.

When asked about the new owner, Deaton replied he will be a “shot in the arm” for the historic .555-mile oval track. Having attended as a child, LeMastus appreciates the past associated with the track. Plans are to keep a lot of things the same while adding new improvements and events.

“Racing hasn’t gotten easier over the years,” said Deaton. With so much competition for the entertainment dollar, new ideas and new events will help the track thrive. He can see the number of events held at Salem Speedway doubling.

Deaton believes the changes LeMastus plans will be a boost for other local businesses. “He’s a good neighbor.”
