The number of accidents and local dissatisfaction with the bypass at its intersection with State Road 60 have prompted further action by the Indiana Department of Transportation.

INDOT will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Salem City Hall to discuss the current plan designs for a proposed roundabout at the SR60 bypass intersection.

“The purpose of the proposed project is to enhance safety at the intersection by reducing the frequency and severity of vehicular collisions at this location,” said INDOT. “The preferred alternative is to reconfigure the intersection into a single-lane roundabout. The proposed project also will include replacing the pavement to full depth, as needed, to build new approach legs leading into the roundabout. Existing guardrails along the south side of the intersection and a portion of the existing guardrail along the north side of SR 60 to the east of the Salem bypass will be removed and not replaced. New guardrail end treatments will be installed. The project proposal will also include intersection lighting.”

INDOT proposes the project will begin in 2021 and will use phased construction, with access to properties maintained at all times during the project.

Proposed construction of the intersection improvement is anticipated to begin in 2021 and would be constructed utilizing phased construction.
