Free Christmas meal at Nices

Last year, Nices Family Diner served Christmas dinner to 212 people. This year, they’re planning for 300.
Owners Brent and Ashley Nice said the idea came about four years ago when they wanted to volunteer to do something different on Christmas for the community.
“We want to do something to give back, something to help those that are less fortunate, but yet we had two kids so it had to be something that we could all do together,” said Ashley. “So we thought why not open the diner to those that need a hot meal or have no one to spend Christmas with. So six days before Christmas we threw together a dinner.”
The Nices’ goal is to feed anyone who may be hungry or alone for the holidays.
“We not only serve dinner, but in the past we had purchased a few toys to give it out to the children that came in along with hats and gloves,” said Ashley.
“We have an organization called Comforting Angels that sets up in the dining room and hands out warm blankets and pillows to families that are in need.”
She recognized the staff that puts in extra time away from their families to make the free event possible.
“Thank you to all who have donated, with out their help we wouldn’t be able to do so much every year!” she said.
If you know of someone who could benefit from a free meal or by getting out, meeting others and enjoying a home cooked Christmas dinner, this is the place to go.
The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25. Nices Diner is located at 1302 W. Mulberry St. in Salem.
Donations will be accepted and gratuity will be appreciated.
