Chris Hambel, 8, will be entering third grade this fall and is keeping up with his reading skills by visiting the school’s summer mobile library program.

Unless you’re a resident of Washington Township, cheap, easy access to the Salem Library isn’t really a reality for you. West Washington schools hope to make things a bit easier for students to maintain their literacy skills over the summer by offering a mobile school library. Students check out books, just like they do at school, and return them when the bookmobile returns to the various stops in the school district.

“We have several kids who have taken advantage of the opportunity to do some reading over the summer,” said West Washington Jr.-Sr. High English teacher Jennifer Stahl. “Every couple weeks, they can take more home for a new supply.”

This is the second year for the mobile library program and Stahl said she’s seen a little less traffic this year than last year, but kids are taking more books each time.

“They’re checking out stacks, half a dozen at a time, when last year, they would take one or two,” she said.

The Hardinsburg stop, she said, attracted the most visitors.

“We have books for the lower and upper elementary and one big box of nonfiction for mixed elementary grades,” Stahl said. “We brought a box of books for older kids, but they usually have specific books in mind. They’ll ask for particular books each time, so I don’t need as big of an inventory for them.”

Like any librarian, Stahl takes requests and offers suggestions. One first grade student’s mother asked her for good books for her son to read that would help him keep up with his skills and Stahl returned to the school, asked teachers for input and pulled a selection for the next book day.

Students have one more chance on Wednesday, July 25, to return and check out books this summer before they return to school. The bookmobile will be at Beck’s Mill from 12:30 to 1 p.m., the Hardinsburg bank building from 1:30 to 2 p.m., Little Twirl in Livonia from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. and the Campbellsburg Community Building from 3 to 3:30 p.m. that day.
