West Washington has applied for a $75,000 STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] grant, but the school pushes the acronym even further — STREAM, which stands for science, technology, reading, engineering, arts and math.

“A part of this concept and what we’re looking to do is incorporate STEM in the elementary school,” said Superintendent Keith Nance. “We’re wanting a teacher that instructs STEM in a STEM lab and individual classes and their teachers will come to the STEM lab and will co-teach these lessons, hopefully encouraging other teachers to take that inquiry-based concept out of the lab and into regular teaching.”

Nance told the board during their March 19 meeting that he had until March 23 to complete the grant application.

“Hopefully we’re fortunate enough to get that but, grant or no grant, we want to move forward full STREAM ahead and attempt to get this thing off the ground for next year,” said Nance.
