We The Youth seeks members

Leadership Rocks this year!

Servant Leadership Rocks will be the theme of this year’s We The Youth Servant Leadership Program.

Yvonne Maxey and Debbie Mildenburger, co-directors of WTY, are excited about the upcoming class. This year they will be focusing on the theme Servant Leadership Rocks and how that applies to the many aspects of servant leadership. WTY is looking to fill this year’s class with six to eight students from each county high school.

During their preparations for the class, Yvonne and Debbie made a few changes to the program that will take effect with this year’s class. WTY will hold their meetings once a month on a Saturday or Sunday. This change came about so that students won’t have to worry about missing class time at school, homework time, test prep and so on.

Students chosen for the program will be rewarded for class attendance and group participation with one excused absence from school at the end of each semester.

In the past, WTY has chosen one or two projects to complete at the end of the class. However, in the last year or two, classes have desired smaller projects to work on through the year. Yvonne and Debbie decided to continue with this trend by adding small projects that would coincide with the servant leadership skill on the agenda each month during the first semester of the class. During the second semester WTY class members will continue to serve our community. However, the class members will choose the projects they want to help with and work through the leadership skills as a group they are learning to get those projects to completion.

Some things will remain the same for WTY. Food, fun and fellowship will continue to be a part of each class. WTY will also continue to primarily meet at the Awareness Washington County building. They will also continue to invite various members of the community share their Servant Leadership stories with the class. AWC and WTY alumni and community members are invited to nominate students for the WTY class by calling Yvonne or Debbie.

Any student who is interested in the class can find the application on the AWC website (awarenesswashingtoncounty.org) on the We The Youth page. You may also contact Yvonne or Debbie and they will get one to you. When applications are turned in they must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation.

WTY and Awareness Washington County will help provide transportation to class for students as needed. There is also tuition assistance available. Tuition for the class is $100. If you have any questions about the We The Youth class please give Yvonne 812-620-0282 or Debbie 812-786-2016 a call.
