The Number 1 Louisville cover band, according to the Leo Readers’ Choice Awards, is coming to Campbellsburg next month.

Teacher and cheerleading coach Gina Rosenbaum is a big fan and has gone to see The Juice Box Heroes perform multiple times to packed venues, including the New Albany Amphitheater. The cover band sings music from the ‘70s to current songs.

“They put on a great show,” said Rosenbaum. “They travel all around and they’re quite busy. They have big crowds, sometimes several thousand people. They packed the New Albany Amphitheater. They just keep getting bigger … The band is so nice and friendly,” she said. “I thought it would be cool to have them come and maybe raise some money … I would have liked to have had an outdoor concert, but by the time I got it booked, it was too late in the year. They’re very in-demand.”

So she went to the late Athletic Director Phillip Bowsman last summer and suggested this as an option for a cheerleading fundraiser.

“I told him I was tired of selling cookie dough and pizza kits,” she said. “Phillip was always very supportive of me and the program and he said he would help in any way he could. [Principal] Mary Anne [Knapp] and [Superintendent] Keith [Nance] were also very supportive.”

Then tragedy struck the West Washington community with the sudden passing of Bowsman from a stroke.

“It was like the world stopped turning for us here,” said Rosenbaum. “He was a dear friend; I’ve known him forever. I was his chaperone on his eighth-grade Washington D.C. trip when I was subbing at Salem in college. I’ve known the Reasors for years, too.”

When school recommenced after winter break, Rosenbaum said she went to Nance to ask if anyone had started a memorial scholarship in honor of Bowsman.

“He would have loved that,” she said, “to help out some kids with college.”

She wanted to change the concert fundraiser to include the start of a memorial scholarship. The funds will cover the costs of the event and then the proceeds go to memorial scholarship.

The concert will be from 7 to 10 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the sunken gym at West Washington. Tickets are $10 in advance for all ages, and $15 at the door. Tickets are available at the school, at Leader Publishing, Lincks and Cheddar Depot. Tickets can be reserved at the school if a check for payment is sent in advance.

Rosenbaum said First Harrison and Mid-Southern Savings banks have been helpful as well. First Harrison is selling tickets at their Charlestown Road and Greenville branches and both banks are including the concert information in their outdoor marquees.

“I’m really excited,” said Rosenbaum. “I hope we sell tons of tickets. I hope we fill the gym. The more tickets, the more money can go to the scholarship in memory of Phillip.”

The gym seats 3,000, Rosenbaum said, so at $10 a ticket, a packed house could raise $30,000 or more, not including concessions, which will be for sale.

“It’s good, clean fun,” said Rosenbaum. “It will be a great event to bring the kids.”

She said ticket sales have started to pick up already.

“I’ve already sold more than 100 tickets and I’ve dropped off 250 tickets to area businesses to sell,” said Rosenbaum. “The cheerleaders all have tickets as well and people are starting to ask for them.”

“It’s a great opportunity to bring a very popular band to our community and a great cause, to raise funds for a memorial scholarship in the name of Phillip,” said Nance.

Nance said there is an account started for a memorial scholarship, so those inclined to donate can mail a check to the school with “Bowsman Scholarship” in the memo line. The address is 8026 W. Batt Rd., Campbellsburg, Indiana, 47108.
