In an effort to help young girls learn about themselves and gain confidence, a new program has been created at Salem Middle School.

“Sister Circle” is a club for girls that will meet every Friday morning before school. Sometimes the group will have events and do special things on the weekends.

“Sister Circle is a sisterhood that will teach kindness, respect and help these girls find their self worth,” said organizer Kala Ponder.

Savannah Hartsfield and Kristen Bailey will also help lead the group and hope to teach the girls interview skills, life lessons, job opportunities and more.

Letters have been sent home with approximately 30 students who are invited for this first round of the club. Hartsfield said it is a wide spectrum of girls, from those who need an extra listening ear to those who can be that shoulder to lean on.

“We have invited girls we thought could use the circle in some way in their life,” she said. “It will get larger as we go...we want to help everyone!”

The girls will participate in a service project once a month and write notes to encourage each other throughout the week.

Ponder said they are looking for anyone who would like to sponsor an activity or a meeting. They plan to have breakfast food and drinks for the girls when they meet. They are thankful to Natalie Ewen and Jana Ewen who have each offered to be a sponsor.

“We are excited to have strong women influences for these girls,” said Ponder. “We want to let them know that someone does care for them.”

Ponder, Hartsfield and Bailey all work at Salem Middle School and said getting to know these students will be beneficial for them as well.

“The better you know them, the better they’ll do in school,” said Ponder.
