SHS participates in Great American Smoke Out

Salem High School SADD participated in the Great American Smoke Out campaign by picking up cigarette butts around the schools and hospital. Much to their surprise in less than 45 minutes they had accumulated a large pile of butts and cigarette paraphernalia along the road.

Ciara Cole and Marissa Collins both said, “It’s sad to see the amount of butts around the schools when it’s supposed to be a smoke free campus.”

The campaign is in conjunction with the #RaiseItForHealth that is advocating raising the cigarette tax in Indiana. Indiana’s cigarette tax is the lowest in the region. The goal is make Salem a healthier place to live by encouraging people to stop smoking. If the taxes are raised over $300 million would be available to tackle health issues in Indiana.
