Salem, Indiana – The National Honor Society (NHS) announced that Evan Shelby, a high school senior at Salem High School and member of the NHS, has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist. Shelby was chosen from more than 11,000 applicants and will receive a $3,200 scholarship toward higher education.

For nearly 100 years, NHS members have been making a difference in their schools and communities and the NHS Scholarship is NASSP’s way of recognizing the most exceptional of these student leaders. Recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated work to support the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

“Evan Shelby represents the qualities of a true leader.  The ability to set an obtain goals, collaboration with peers and producing successful outcomes makes Evan a difference maker at Salem High School.   Evan’s future has many opportunities, and he will find the path to obtain his goals,” SHS Principal, Troy Albert, commented.

Nicole Purlee, adviser for the Lyon chapter of NHS at Salem High School stated, “Evan is an exceptional young man who never hesitates to help others in our school and community. He will no doubt succeed at achieving his future goals and dreams.  While at SHS, Evan has been an example of school spirit and leadership to his peers in the classroom, on the court, and in the community.”

At Salem High School, Shelby has participated in varsity boys tennis and golf, National Honor Society (co-president), Bohemian Supper Club, Booster Club, Science Club, French Club, FCA, Hi-Y, and Student Council. He has also been a previous class officer. This fall, he will attend Indiana University-Southeast to study Pre-Medicine with the future goal of being an anesthesiologist.

Since 1946, more than $15 million in scholarships has been awarded to outstanding NHS senior members to support college access and student success. The scholarship program is supported by the parent organization of NHS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
