SCS will vote on projects to pursue at Monday meeting

During a work session meeting on Thursday evening, the Salem Community Schools board heard from financing professionals and discussed a plan for pursuing projects that have been being discussed in the past several weeks.

Superintendent Lynn Reed released a statement last month saying she would recommend the board move forward on just the projects at the middle and high school and hold off on the projects that dealt with athletics or the renovations at Bradie Shrum Elementary. The board eventually decided that they would vote on a proposal during their Monday meeting that would move forward with only the security upgrades at the middle school and the pool renovations, which will cost $4.2 million together.

"I believe every project listed should be done," said board member Steve Motsinger. "I see the need for them, but I also see the need to slow down and do this in stages. I'm a firm believer in the music addition and the arts program. I was in band myself and I think the kids should have a chance to pursue music if they want to and I believe it should be at the high school. We need a place for kids to perform, where we can show them off and I want to look into that more."

The board also discussed forming a committee as soon as possible to move forward on finding funding avenues and discussing further the music addition project.
