The West Washington FFA club took some time recently to treat area farmers. Five club officers loaded the school’s mini bus and headed out on what chapter president, Mason Guthrie called a farmer scavenger hunt.

“Finding the farmers wasn’t much of a challenge,” Guthrie said. “We just drove around looking for dust and bright colors.” It started slow, but once they found the first farmer, it picked up.

Chapter Vice President, Wade Elliott said, “Since it is harvest time, we knew that if we drove around, we would have a good chance of running into some farmers and we did, we distributed 55 bags!”

In those bags were a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, trail mix, fruit snacks, a brownie and either a sweet tea or water. Bergall said, “There were other treats, too, to tide them over in the cab during a long day’s work.”

The idea for the Farmer Goodie Bags was born at a FFA officer meeting. Guthrie said, “This idea was brought up by our advisor, Mr. Bergdall, during one of our officer meetings. We loved the idea and kept finding ways to grow off of it.”

Elliott added, “We wanted to do something for the farmers in our area because they are the backbone of our community.”

All of the farmers were appreciative of the gesture. Elliott said, “The farmers were very surprised and grateful to see FFA members running through their field with bags of snacks.”

“Several farmers put on huge smiles when they received their bags,” Guthrie added.

Not only did the farmers benefit, the students, some who stepped out of their comfort zone to do this good deed, also gleaned something from it. For Guthrie the best part was seeing the reactions of his peers to how appreciative the farmers were for a little snack.

Elliott said, “We were satisfied with doing the good deed and it has inspired us to do more things like that in the future.”

They funded the project with money raised from their mum fundraiser.

In addition to Guthrie and Elliott, Allie Elrod, Charlee Williams, and Lindi Barksdale also participated.

Bergdall said, “The FFA thanks our farmers and their families for all they do and wish them a bountiful and safe harvest season.”
