The East Washington School Corporation announced Wednesday, with support from the Washington County Health Department, they are canceling all commerical travel for staff and students until further notice, due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus.

“We realize that this action will be a major disappointment to students who were planning to attend events such as the senior trip, 8th grade Washington DC, and the middle school trip to the Ron Clark Academy,” Superintendent Dennis Stockdale said in a news release. “At this time, the risk of potentially bringing the illness to Washington County far outweighs the inconvenience of cancelled trips. Sponsors will be working with travel companies to discuss options for postponement or possible reimbursement.”

The school has created a Pandemic Response Team, which is working on policies and procedures for the prevention of the virus in the three school buildings, along with a plan to be put in place for digital instruction should school closure become necessary.

“During this time of serious public health concern, we truly are all in this together,” said Stockdale. “East Washingotn School Corporation will notify parents, students and community members as new information develops.”
