Officials at East Washington found out the middle school had been designated an Indiana Middle Level Education Association School to Watch a few months ago, joining 12 other schools in the state and more than 465 middle-level schools (grades 5 to 9) nationwide.
As a School to Watch, EWMS will act as something of a mentor to other schools wanting help with the four criteria Schools to Watch are judged on: academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational support and processes.
The school held a celebrational ceremony April 5.
“This is a really big deal,” Principal Amber King told students. “… In order to become a School to Watch, there’s a lot of things we had to do to prove that we’re the cream of the crop in the schools of Indiana.”In June, King and some of her leadership team will go to Washington D.C. to be recognized by other educators from Schools to Watch.Shirley Wright is the executive director of the Indiana Middle Level Education Association and the Schools to Watch state director. “You are very, very special here,” said Wright. “I’ve been sitting in that corner seat and there’s been a few tears in my eyes because it’s just so much fun to watch you … You know when to really get excited and yell and scream and then you know when we need to get quiet and listen. That’s special … and I know that all of you, wherever you end up, you are going to make a difference. Every single one of you is going to make a difference and I think if you keep up with the news and know what is happening in the world today, we need you to make a difference. We need you desperately to get out there and do the things you’ve been taught here and that caring feeling with each other — carry that with you. We need you out there!”
