Fourth grader Abby Lewen knows what a children’s hospital looks like at Christmastime. Her sister, Charlie, now 20, had to have brain surgery at one and it made a lasting impression on Lewen, long after Charlie recovered.

“All these kids were so sad and I wanted to help them,” she said.

She and 11 other student council members put donation boxes for new toys (as required by Norton Children’s Hospital) for other students to donate. They planned to donate the four of five boxes full of toys last week, but the snow day threw a wrench in their plans, so they’re planning to extend the winter holidays for children in the hospital and distribute the toys when they return back to school after winter break.

Lewen said the student council also took part in “Sock-tober,” where students gathered socks, along with hats and gloves, which student council advisor, third-grade teacher Kayla Moore, delivered to the women’s shelter in Salem. The other student council sponsor is second-grade teacher Raymond Porter.

“They’re very mature for their age,” said Moore. “It’s very fun to listen to their ideas. They’ve thought of things I wouldn’t have. They’re definitely at the top of their game.”

The student council also held a food drive around Thanksgiving and participated in the school’s Veterans Day program, handling themselves well during some last-minute changes to their plans, Moore said.
