EHS, WW make graduation decisions, SHS will decide Monday

Eastern High School  and West Washington have graduation plans in place for the Class of 2020 and Salem will decide on a plan Monday at the school board’s regular meeting.

Eastern’s graduation is scheduled for Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. and will be held on the football field. Should it rain that day, graduation will be held Saturday, July 18.

Camden Stewart, who is a member of the Class of 2020 at EHS, said he was glad the school came to that decision.

“It isn’t exactly when we planned to graduate, but the main thing is we are having it and getting to walk across the stage,” he said. “This is what many of us have been looking forward to  for a long time!”

West Washington’s graduation will be Friday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. at West Washington. Superintendent Keith Nance said he isn’t sure of where on the school campus the graduation will be held.

The Salem School Board is currently polling members of the senior class. The poll gives them two options.

One option will have students driving down Shelby Street, getting out of their cars and getting their diploma handed to them by an administrator. At that point, the student would get back in the car and drive to the back of the school for pictures.

Board president, Rodney Brough said the second option would be a similar plan to the one Eastern has decided to go with, pushing the date back to mid-July and holding the ceremony outside on the football field.

Brough said the board will have the results of the poll at Monday’s meeting and a decision will be made at that point.

The senior prom wasn’t as fortunate at Eastern. Administrators decided to cancel the event for this year and offer the Class of 2020 an invitation to attend the 2021 prom free of charge.

That is only for members of the Class of 2020. Any guest who is not in that class will be required to purchase a ticket.

West Washington will have their prom on the school campus on July 11, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Brough said no decision has been made regarding the SHS Prom.
