Scholarship Award Information (for SHS Class of 2018 and older)

The Edgar and Elinor DeJean Scholarship

The Edgar and Elinor DeJean Scholarship is a scholarship award to a deserving postsecondary student who is at least in the second year of study at an accredited institution of learning. The Scholarship may be awarded for up to 4 semesters and will increase in value each year of its renewal up until such time as the individual completes his/her degree or certification. Funds for this scholarship were collected by Salem Education Foundation in honor of Ed DeJean who was a significant founding member of Salem Education Foundation Dollars for Scholars.  Scholarship America provided matching funds for the starting of the endowment for this scholarship.  The beginning scholarship award for 2019-20 academic 1st semester is $800 and increases each semester.  The scholarship application may be accessed by going to the Salem Education Foundation page of the Dollars for Scholars website:

Eligibility. To be eligible for the Edgar and Elinor DeJean Scholarship the following are required:

  1. Be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. permanent resident (holders of a Permanent Residence Card), or

      an individual granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood

      Arrivals Program (DACA).

  2. Have received a high school diploma or the equivalent from Salem Community Schools,

      Washington County, Indiana.

  3. Have completed or expect to successfully complete a minimum of one year of

      postsecondary education.

  4. Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at the sophomore level or higher at an accredited

      two- or four-year college, university or vocational technical

      school in the United States for the entire next academic year.

 

Criteria for the Awarding of the Scholarship. Below describes the criteria considered when selecting who will receive the Edgar and Elinor DeJean Scholarship:

   1. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent.)

   2. Demonstrate financial need.

   3. Demonstrate leadership and/or service that benefit others.

   4. Overcome some obstacle, challenge, or difficulty in pursuit of a postsecondary education.

   5. Present other unique, distinguishable, and significant personal qualities and/or experiences

       that provide a clear indication of deserving award and/or recognition by receiving this

       scholarship.
