While certainly not all dads struggle with “girl stuff” and relegate such things to Mom, for even the most “girl dad” of dads, doing their daughter’s hair takes practice and help that YouTube videos simply don’t provide.

The Salem High School cheerleading squad hopes to provide some help with that during their Daddy-Daughter Brunch and Brush on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

“We were wanting to do a fundraiser that was a little different from what we’d done before,” said coach Rachel Huffaker. “… We put a lot of emphasis on things that are cheer-related, but we wanted to do something to benefit these girls in general. … A lot of people have Valentine’s plans, so we thought maybe we could do something for dads and daughters, kind of a day date for them. Sometimes dads need a little help … It’s right before the daddy-daughter dance, too [scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23], so this might be a way for dads to be able to do their daughter’s hair for that.”

There’s no “dad” requirement or age limit for the event. Uncles and nieces, grandfathers and granddaughters, little girls to teens, all are welcome.

“Any girl looking to spend some special time with the guy in their life,” said Huffaker. “I know I would have loved this as a kid.”

The Brunch and Brush will take place in the high school cafeteria and tickets cost $25, with an additional $5 for each girl after the first. Tickets can be purchased at the high school office [make checks out to SHS Cheer] by Friday, Feb. 8. There will be games and a few lucky winners will receive door prizes of hair goodies.
