Rick Voyles will be the county’s new highway department superintendent.
The unanimous vote was held during the Tuesday, Nov. 21, meeting of the Washington County Board of Commissioners.
Voyles, who is currently the department’s District 1 Road Foreman, attended the meeting. When asked, he accepted the appointment, which is effective Dec. 1.
The position of county highway supervisor was eliminated by a commissioners’ vote in January 2016. It was believed the move would lead to a more efficient department and reap cost savings for the county.
When county officials drafted the 2018 budget earlier this year, the superintendent’s position was restored.
Commissioners had planned to have a superintendent in place by Jan. 1, but the hiring date was moved up due to concerns about wintry weather.
The county also advertised for a clerical position. Commission President Phillip Marshall said that position will be filled Jan. 1.
The county advertised for the supervisor’s position as well as for a clerical position and the application deadline was Oct. 31. Each position is budgeted to pay $40,000 and $30,564 respectively.
