City officials have approved the sale of the current airport property to an investment group that plans to use the property as a business incubator.

The approval to sell the approximately 51-acre property, which is located at 2593 W. State Road 56, was given during the Monday, May 14, meeting of the Salem Common Council.

John Mead, attorney for the Salem Municipal Airport Board of Aviation Commissioners, explained the proposal received from the investment group, which wants to use the property to provide space to business startups until those small businesses become financially viable enough to obtain their own financing.

Mead explained the proposal received a favorable vote during a special airport board meeting on Wednesday, May 3. The investment group’s proposal was favored by the airport board since it offered more employment potential and because it would “significantly benefit” the local pilots group.

That benefit is the investment group’s willingness to allow pilots to use the current runway as a partial access to the new runway.
